Hard times and the past
Reading – A survivor’s story:
“When the earthquake hit at 4.17 a.m., most people had been sleeping for hours. Mehmet had just finished his night shift. By the time the rescue teams arrived, neighbours had already started to search the ruins. Years later, he still remembers how the whole town had come together to help each other.”
Back to the past – daily life in the old days: People used to fetch water from the village fountain. Grandmothers would tell stories by the stove on winter nights. Children used to play hopscotch and marbles in the street.
Vocabulary: survive, rescue, shelter, hardship, refugee, poverty, famine, solidarity, memories, nostalgia
Past Perfect Simple and Continuous
Past Perfect = had + V3 → Geçmişteki bir olaydan daha önce tamamlanmış eylem
- When we arrived at the station, the train had already left. (önce tren gitti, sonra biz vardık)
- She didn’t recognise me because I had changed a lot.
Past Perfect Continuous = had been + V-ing → Geçmişteki bir andan önce bir süredir devam etmekte olan eylem
- They had been walking for six hours when they found the shelter.
- His eyes were red because he had been crying.
Signal words: before, after, by the time, already, just, never … before, when, until
Telling a story in the past
| Tense | Function in a story | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Past Simple | Main events in order | The siren sounded, and everyone ran to the shelter. |
| Past Continuous | Background, actions in progress | It was raining and people were sleeping. |
| Past Perfect | Events before the main events | They had prepared an emergency bag the week before. |
| used to / would | Past habits | We used to spend summers in the village. |
⚠️ would yalnızca geçmiş eylem alışkanlıkları için kullanılır, durumlar için değil: We used to live in Kars. (✗ would live)
Writing – A story: Set the scene (time, place, weather) → main events → a problem → the climax → the ending → a lesson or feeling

Örnek soru ve çözümü
Zaman şeridine göre iki cümleyi Past Perfect ile birleştiriniz: “The train left.” / “We arrived at the station.”
When we arrived at the station, the train had (already) left.
Çözümlü örnekler
1. “By the time I woke up, my mother _ (cook) breakfast.” Kolay
Çözümhad cooked.
2. “She was exhausted because she _ (work) all day.” Orta
Çözümhad been working.
3. Correct: “We would live in a small village when I was a child.” Zor
ÇözümWe used to live in a small village… (live bir durum fiilidir, would ile kullanılmaz).
Sık yapılan hatalar
- Past Perfect’i yalnızca uzak geçmiş için sanmak (geçmişteki bir olaydan önceyi gösterir).
- “had went” demek (doğrusu had gone).
- would’u durum fiilleriyle kullanmak.
